Free GST invoice generator

Fill in your business, your customer and the items. The GST is worked out as you type, and the preview is drawn by the same engine InDhanPay Books uses for its own invoices. Download it as a PDF when it looks right.

How to make a GST invoice with this tool

  1. Pick the document. Choose Tax invoice if you are registered under GST and charge tax, or Bill of supply if you are a composition dealer or sell only exempt goods or services.
  2. Enter your business details. Name, address and GSTIN. When the GSTIN is valid, your state is filled in from its first two digits. You can add your logo; it stays in your browser.
  3. Enter the buyer. For a registered buyer, add their GSTIN. Their state is the place of supply, which decides whether you charge CGST + SGST or IGST.
  4. Add the items. Description, HSN code for goods or SAC for services, quantity, unit, rate before GST and the GST rate. Each line’s amount and the totals update immediately.
  5. Download the PDF. Press Download PDF and choose Save as PDF in the print window. On a phone, use the share or print option the browser offers.

How the GST is calculated

For each line, the taxable value is quantity × rate. GST is the taxable value × the GST rate, rounded to the paisa. Within one state it is split into two equal halves, CGST and SGST (UTGST in a union territory without a legislature); if splitting leaves an odd paisa, it goes to SGST so the halves always add up to the tax. Between states, the full amount is IGST. The invoice total is rounded to the nearest rupee and the difference is shown as a round-off line. These are the same rules InDhanPay Books applies to every invoice, so the numbers here match what you would get in the app.

Not sure which rate applies? Our GST calculator shows the current slabs and the CGST, SGST and IGST split for any amount, and the GSTIN checker catches a mistyped GSTIN before it goes on an invoice.

What a GST invoice must show

Rule 46 of the CGST Rules lists what a tax invoice must contain: your name, address and GSTIN; a serial number unique for the financial year; the date; the buyer’s details and GSTIN if registered; HSN or SAC; description, quantity and unit; taxable value; the rate and amount of each tax; the place of supply for inter-state sales; whether reverse charge applies; and a signature. This generator prints all of these when you fill them in. The GST invoice format guide explains each field, and there is a matching guide for the bill of supply and the quotation.

When a free generator is enough, and when it isn’t

For an occasional invoice, this tool is all you need. Once you bill every week, the gaps show: you have to keep the invoice numbers in sequence yourself, the PDFs live in your downloads folder, nobody reminds a customer who hasn’t paid, and at the end of the month someone has to type every invoice into the GSTR-1 return.

InDhanPay Books does those parts for you. Invoices are numbered in series, stored, shared on WhatsApp, SMS or email with a payment link, followed up with automatic reminders, and summarised into GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B reports. It works in the browser and on Android. See how it fits retail and kirana stores, professional services and small businesses, or compare plans.

Frequently asked questions

Is this GST invoice generator really free?

Yes. You can make and download as many invoices as you like without an account. The PDF carries a small "Made with InDhanPay Books" line at the foot of the last page. If you want invoices saved, numbered automatically and sent on WhatsApp, you can sign up for InDhanPay Books.

Do I need a GSTIN to make an invoice here?

No. GSTIN fields are optional. A business that is not registered under GST cannot charge GST, though, so it should issue a bill of supply or a plain bill instead of a tax invoice. Choose "Bill of supply" at the top of the form to drop the tax columns.

How does the tool decide between CGST + SGST and IGST?

It compares your state with the buyer’s state (the place of supply). If they are the same, the GST is split equally into CGST and SGST. If they are different, the whole GST is charged as IGST. If you enter a valid GSTIN, the state is filled in from its first two digits.

Is my invoice data stored on your servers?

No. Everything you type stays in your browser. The draft is kept in your browser’s local storage so it survives a refresh, and the PDF is made by your browser’s own print function. Clearing your browser data removes it.

Can I use this for an e-invoice (IRN)?

No. Businesses whose turnover crosses the e-invoicing limit must report each B2B invoice to the Invoice Registration Portal and print the IRN and signed QR code on it. This free tool does not do that. InDhanPay Books can generate the IRN and e-way bill from the invoice on its higher plans.

Which GST rates can I choose?

The rates in force since 22 September 2025: 0%, 0.25%, 3%, 5%, 18% and 40%. In that change most items on the old 12% and 28% slabs moved to 5%, 18% or 40%, so those two slabs are not offered here. Books lets you add a custom rate if you still need one.
