What an HSN code is

HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) is the international goods classification India uses for GST. The first 2 digits are the chapter, 4 digits the heading, 6 the sub-heading and 8 the Indian tariff item. The code decides the GST rate, so the same shop can sell 0%, 5% and 18% items on one bill.

How many digits to print

With aggregate turnover up to ₹5 crore in the previous financial year, print at least 4 digits on B2B tax invoices (optional on B2C). Above ₹5 crore, print 6 digits on every invoice. GST 2.0 slabs are 0%, 5%, 18% and 40%, with 3% for gold and silver and 0.25% for rough diamonds.
